This report presents the main results obtained from the two archaeological missions carried out on the island of São Vicente in 1998 and 2005 with the support of the Portuguese Center for Underwater Activities (CPAS).
In 1998, the effective archaeological interest of the site was confirmed, located over the sea, in a sheltered place in the vast bay of Salamansa, located in the northern part of the island, having recorded the respective extent and stratigraphy and proceeding to the collection of samples for dating.
ler maisAlthough the results of that campaign had been published, indicating a residential station, revealed by the remarkable accumulation of shells, accompanied by abundant fragments of handcrafted ceramics, of African production, its true nature remained undefined.
It was therefore necessary to carry out the full excavation of the area that still remained from the station, which was continuously subject to strong marine erosion, as well as the collection of new materials for dating, in order to confirm the preliminary conclusions previously obtained, objectives that were materialized in 2005.
